Basal Body Temperature and Lose Weight

Hey ladies, I guess some of you still wondering about Basal Body Temperature (BBT), what is that and how it works with our diet.

Basal Body Temperature is like the basic energy of your active body. It is your lowest body temperature attained during rest, to get an accurate reading you must take your temperature when you first wake up in the morning, everyday. This means you must take your temperature immediately after awakening and before any physical activity.

There are 3 kinds of metabolism:
1. Metabolism, the energy needed to generate new cells skin, flesh, bone, internal organs, break down old tissue and rebuild new tissue. The most important nutrient for metabolism is Protein. Protein deficiency can make our skin, nail and hair rough.

2. Basal Metabolism, refers to the basic energy of the active body. It is for the maintenance of internal organs, body temperature and digestion of food.

3. Real Metabolism, is the basic metabolism, coupled with the activities needed to live energy, plus the summary of the energy required for life.

If you have bought your own BBT Thermometer from Toshiba, you can start measure your temperature about the same time each morning. Keep in mind that if you don't take your temperature immediately after waking up, any pattern that you find may be inaccurate. So, keep an eye for that.

Here are the example of what you can monitor with the BBT Thermometer from Toshiba. With monitoring your BBT everyday you'll understand more about your body.

For taking care of your Diet, first you must know basic metabolism and your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). BMR is the number of calories you would burn with no activity. BMR usually measure in MJ/day or Kcal/day.

How to Calculate your BMR:

BMR estimation formulas

The Original Harris-Benedict Equation:
  • for men, P = \left ( \frac {13.7516 m} {1 ~ \mbox {kg}} + \frac {5.0033 h} {1 ~ \mbox {cm}} - \frac {6.7550 a} {1 ~ \mbox {year}} + 66.4730 \right ) \frac {\mbox {kcal}} {\mbox {day}}
  • for men, 66 + (6.23 x weight in lbs) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.8 x age)
  • for women, P = \left ( \frac {9.5634 m} {1 ~ \mbox {kg}} + \frac {1.8496 h} {1 ~ \mbox {cm}} - \frac {4.6756 a} {1 ~ \mbox {year}} + 655.0955 \right ) \frac {\mbox {kcal}} {\mbox {day}}
  • for women, 655 + (4.3 x weight in lbs) + (4.7 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age)

If one day the BMR is 2200kcl, eat only 400kcl of things everyday.
[2200] - [400] / 7.2 = 250gr
You'll lose weight about 250g everyday. If you do that for 1 month, you'll lose 7.5 kg but hey, personally I think that's too much in 1 month, lol.

High basal metabolic rate = easy to burn fat

Btw if our body temperature increase by 1% then the basal metabolism increases by 13%. So make sure you watch your body temperature everyday, so it's easier to manage your diet.

People who have more muscle in their body have higher basal metabolic rate. If you eat less than the basic metabolism of calories, you'll be able to lose weight. However excessive calorie deficiency will reduce basal metabolism and it will lead to hoarding fat in our body.

You know that metabolism is related to BBT, raising the temperature of body helps to boost metabolism burning off more calories before whether or not we go to the gym. Isn't that great?. For people with low normal average body temperature, boosting your metabolism may be as simple as increasing your normal basal body temperature.

Low body temperature alone can be an obstruction to your diet success, just another reason to reform before it is too late. I have a really low body temperature and when I knew about this last year, I start to understand what I must do with my body. I become to realise that my body is easily get fat because I have a slow metabolism and this isn't good.

I start to eat enough and try to never skip my breakfast because it will disturb my metabolism. Also I try to eat natural foods that increase my body temperature. Knowing my basal body temperature is not only useful for my health care administration that usually only professionals to know, but also helps me in my diet.

After holiday I got some fats in my body because I ate too much and didn't do any exercise for 8 months, can you imagine 8 months?! With knowing my BBT and counting my BMR, it's not hard to start my diet really soon next week (after my business trip to Japan).

How important is it to chart?
It is really up to you guys. I find it fun to plan and organise my own diet, also to get to know more about my body. Because woman is more complicated, we have more fats than muscles, unlike men. Beside that, I feel secure for knowing my BBT even though I have a really bad & irregular chart. That makes me a bit uncomfortable, I hope I don't have problem with my fertility though, haha. :)

Anyway if you're wondering where you can buy this BBT Thermometer, you can buy it here and here at Tokopedia.
